Eight months in with my GAC Aion V in Montego Bay. Time for an honest review.
Why I bought it:
The price. Full EV, loaded with features, for the price of a base model Japanese SUV in Jamaica. The GAC dealer in Kingston had it available and the rep was knowledgeable. I did my research on the brand first — GAC is massive in China, not some fly-by-night operation.
The good:
Build quality — solid. Nothing rattles, nothing creaks. The interior materials are better than I expected for the price point. The panoramic sunroof is a crowd-pleaser every time people get in.
Tech — the infotainment is 12.3 inches, wireless CarPlay works perfectly, the 360-degree camera system is genuinely useful for tight Jamaican roads and parking.
Power — more than enough for Jamaica. The torque is instant. Overtaking on the highway is effortless. I have not driven anything that feels this quick at this price.
Running costs — this is where it gets serious. Jamaica's electricity is not cheap, but I am still saving significantly versus petrol. My fuel bill went from J$45,000/month to an electricity cost of J$12,000/month for equivalent driving. That is real money.
The not-so-good:
Parts availability — this is my biggest concern. I needed a wiper blade replaced (standard wear item) and it took the dealer 3 weeks to source it. For a wiper blade. I now buy spares directly from AliExpress, which works but is an inconvenience.
Service intervals — the dealer is in Kingston. I am in Montego Bay. That is 3.5-4 hours of driving for a service. GAC needs more service points across the island.
Software updates — the car's software hasn't had a major OTA update in 4 months. I know the car is improving in China but those updates don't seem to reach Jamaica quickly.
Overall: 8/10
For the price, it's exceptional value. The parts situation will improve as the brand grows here. I'd buy it again.
Anyone else in Jamaica with a Chinese EV? Would love to connect. I feel like I'm one of about 12 EVs on the island.
