Hi everyone! Found this forum through a Google search for "BYD Dolphin Caribbean owners" and I'm genuinely thrilled it exists.
A bit about me:
I'm in Bridgetown, Barbados. I've been driving for 20 years, always Japanese cars — Suzuki Swift, Honda Fit, Toyota Vitz. Last year I made the jump to my first Chinese car: a BYD Dolphin, and I am not looking back.
Why the Dolphin?
Barbados is a tiny island — 34km long, 23km wide. The Dolphin's 400km range is technically 10x what I'd ever need in a day. It's honestly overkill in the best possible way.
The price was also the main reason. For a fully loaded EV with AC, wireless CarPlay, 12.8" rotating screen, and a punchy 70kW motor — nothing Japanese or Korean comes close at this price point.
Reactions from neighbours:
I am the first EV on my entire street. My neighbours thought I was crazy at first. Now three of them have asked me about it. Two are seriously considering Chinese EVs for their next car.
Charging:
I charge on a standard 240V outlet at home. In Barbados, most homes have this and I don't need Level 2 fast charging for island use. Charge overnight, wake up to a full car.
Looking forward to:
Learning from everyone here. Especially tips on keeping the car cool in tropical heat — it's the opposite problem from the Canadians here with their winter range anxiety!
Cheers from the Caribbean 🌴
