I'll be the one to say what some people are thinking
EVs in Jamaica: the honest picture
GOOD:
- home charging works. if you have a driveway and a stable JPS connection, you're fine
- Caribbean heat means better-than-rated range year round
- JPS fuel bill significantly lower than gas
- some duty relief for pure EVs through 2026
NOT GOOD:
- public charging barely exists. I count maybe 6-8 working public chargers in the whole island
- parts and service for Chinese EVs: improving but still one or two importers doing this properly
- road quality: the potholes. you know the potholes. ground clearance matters.
- if JPS has an outage you can't charge. and JPS has outages.
MY TAKE:
EVs in Jamaica right now are viable IF: you own your home/have reliable charging access, AND your daily driving is under 200km, AND you can handle the service/parts situation
not ready for everyone. but ready for more people than most think.
