got a lot of questions after my introduction post about how I actually imported my BYD Atto 3 to Barbados. writing it up properly.
THE PROCESS:
found a reliable UK-based exporter who specialises in RHD EV export. used a recommendation from this forum actually.
chose a car from their inventory — I went 2024 model year with 4k miles from a UK private seller they sourced. cleaner warranty situation than new export.
export docs from UK side: V5C logbook, bill of sale, export certificate. exporter handled most of this.
Barbados customs: classified as a passenger vehicle. BEV status confirmed by documentation. BoC agent handled the import declaration.
duty paid: my total was approximately 45% of CIF value. this hurt. but the duty savings vs a comparable petrol import and the running cost savings means I'll recover it in about 2.5 years.
registration: straightforward once the duty receipt was issued.
total time from deposit to car on my driveway: 14 weeks.
happy to answer specific questions.
