Caribbean owners: what do you do when it's time for service?

real question for Caribbean Chinese car owners:

when your car needs something beyond basic maintenance — a fault code, a sensor issue, anything software-related — what do you actually do?

I'm in Kingston with an Omoda 5. The importer does basic stuff but for anything complicated I'm worried. Anyone found a good general mechanic trained on Chinese EVs? Or is it all back to the importer?

BYD Kingston: the BYD service centre on Maxfield Ave has been surprisingly good. actual trained technicians with BYD diagnostic tools. warranty claims handled properly. I'd check if Omoda has anything similar through your importer network

GAC Aion in Montego Bay: importer is the only option. 2-3 week waits for anything non-basic. it's the main weakness of grey-import Chinese EVs in JA right now

for the software/OTA stuff specifically — most Chinese EVs can push updates over WiFi at home. I've had 2 software fixes that resolved issues without any dealer visit at all. worth keeping the car on home WiFi always

TT: the BYD agent in Chaguanas has a proper service department. for the other brands it varies wildly. this is why I recommend BYD as the safer import choice in T&T — the service chain is more developed

Barbados: home WiFi OTA updates have resolved 2 of 3 issues I've had. for the physical stuff the importer is the only option and waits can be long. it's the known limitation of being a small market

the OTA fixes at home tip is honestly brilliant and underused. so much stuff that would need a dealer visit 5 years ago now just gets fixed by sleeping with the car on WiFi. game changer for small markets

That's a lot of reliance on over-the-air updates for issues in the Caribbean. While it sounds convenient, physical dealership support is still key for minor hardware faults.

This reliance on OTA for the Atto 3 is spot on, truly. Several updates have already come down the wire and resolved minor infotainment bugs.

Yeah, the OTA updates are certainly handy for the software glitches, totally agree with everyone on that front. But like any car, physical mechanical parts still need hands-on checks.
