been seeing a lot of questions about home charging setup. did mine 10 months ago. here's the full picture.
MY SETUP: BYD Atto 3. detached house. electrical panel in garage. installed a 32A NEMA 14-50 outlet and bought a Grizzl-E Level 2 charger.
WHAT I SPENT:
- Electrician: $650 (ran new 50A circuit from main panel to garage. mine was close. longer run = more $)
- Grizzl-E charger: $599 (including bracket, cable holder)
- Total: ~$1,250
WHAT PEOPLE DON'T TELL YOU:
- Get quotes from 3 electricians. mine ranged from $500 to $1,100 for the same job.
- Tell the electrician you want 50A circuit even if your charger is 32A. gives headroom for future.
- Check with your utility about EV rates. Ontario Hydro has off-peak rates where I pay ~$0.08/kWh after 9pm. timing matters.
- The BYD charge scheduling in the car lets you set a departure time. it figures out when to start charging to hit full on off-peak. use this.
- You don't need to use the BYD branded charger. any Level 2 J1772 charger works.
annual electricity cost for 20,000km of driving on off-peak rates: approximately $380.
