the 'is this a Chinese car?' conversation — how do you handle it

every single week someone asks me about my BYD Seal. usually the conversation goes:

them: "nice car, what is it?"
me: "BYD Seal"
them: (pause) "...BYD? is that... Chinese?"
me: "yes"
them: variable reaction

the variable reaction is what I find interesting. the responses fall into roughly 4 categories:

IMPRESSED (30%): "I've heard great things actually!" — usually younger people or EV-aware people
SKEPTICAL (25%): "really? is it reliable?" — understandable, slowly being converted
CONFUSED (25%): they've heard the name before but not sure what to make of it. genuinely curious.
DISMISSIVE (20%): "I'd stick with Japanese myself." — getting smaller over time

the dismissive ones are the fun ones to talk to 6 months later when you show them your electricity bill vs their fuel receipts.

how do others handle these conversations?

I've started leading with "it's an EV from the world's largest EV company" before I say BYD. the "world's largest" framing changes people's reactions significantly.

the dismissive to converted pipeline is so satisfying. my neighbour who mocked the Seal in October asked me in February what the range was and whether I could put in a good word for him at the dealer

I usually just say "it's a BYD" and watch people google it on their phones while we're talking. the google reaction is usually "oh it's actually really well reviewed"

Brampton: I basically never get the skeptical/dismissive reaction here. Brampton/Mississauga South Asian community has been incredibly early adopting on Chinese EVs. peer network effects are real.
